Dealing with a Miscarriage with Compassion and Kindness

Pregnancy is a miracle, but when a pregnancy ends suddenly and unexpectedly, one’s view of pregnancy can be forever changed. When a miscarriage happens, many women feel as if their body let them down. And for some, miscarriages can happen time and time again. 

After one miscarriage, pregnancy can become associated with anxiety and worry. Concerns regarding the success of the pregnancy and the baby’s health become the main focus. However, one thing that is rarely talked about is that miscarriage happens frequently, and the feelings of loss and grief are felt by many women and men.

While only time will heal the sadness, we have five suggestions for how to deal with a miscarriage.

  1. Dealing with a miscarriage can be painful, but it’s important to acknowledge the child’s death. Depending on the age of the fetus, you may wish to have a memorial service with close family and friends. Finding a way to memorialize your pregnancy will help you and your partner get closure.
  1. While most miscarriages are due to genetic abnormalities that prevent the fetus from developing normally, many women blame themselves for losing their child. It’s important to know that routine activities like working, exercising, having sex, or getting a flu shot do not result in a miscarriage. Be compassionate toward yourself and seek the support of other women who have lived through the same experience.
  1. One of the hardest things about dealing with a miscarriage is the hormonal shifts as the body readjusts and heals. The change in hormonal levels may intensify emotional feelings for several weeks. Treat yourself with kindness and acceptance during this time, and remind yourself that the roller coaster of emotions will pass.
  1. While a miscarriage occurs within a woman’s body, their male partners also suffer the loss of their unborn child. However, how to best deal with a miscarriage as a man can be very different. Often, men feel helpless or inadequate because they cannot solve or fix their partner’s grief. Therefore, it’s essential for men to share their feelings of loss and sadness and to show their partners how much they love and care for them during this painful time.
  1. While couples may fear suffering another pregnancy loss, one of the best strategies for how to deal with a miscarriage is to start planning your next pregnancy. Many women miscarry, then go on to have healthy pregnancies in the future. Don’t give up on your dream of having a happy family!
