How exactly do you decide who to trust to nurture your child while in utero? Choosing a surrogate to help you grow your family is a big decision — one that you don’t have to make alone. Before matching, Family Creations works with you to review our qualified surrogate profiles. You’ll also learn more about the surrogacy process, and we’ll answer any questions you have about specific surrogates. We don’t rest until we’ve found your ideal match.

Family Creations makes the matching process as stress-free as possible by coordinating a meeting time (phone, Skype, in-person) and facilitating the match meeting between the Intended Parent(s) and surrogate. While we cover all of the basics in making sure our surrogates are eligible, there are some other things to consider when determining whether or not a particular surrogate will be a good match for you. Learn what you should consider when you select a surrogate at Family Creations.

Questions to Ask

There are certain beliefs and boundary preferences you want to align as you’re choosing a surrogate. Here are some questions to ask yourself and potential surrogates throughout this process:

  • Would you like to be in the room during the delivery?
  • What do you want your relationship with your surrogate to be like?
  • Do you want the surrogate involved with the child post-birth?
  • Will you want the surrogate to pump breast milk for the child?
  • How do you and the surrogate feel about selective reduction or abortion?
  • How many embryos do you want to transfer? How many babies do you want?

These are all very serious questions that require intensive consideration from both sides. If you and a surrogate disagree on one of these major decisions, perhaps they’re not the right match for you.

Qualities in Your Surrogate

While there are certain requirements a surrogate must meet to be a viable option at Family Creations, there are still many qualities you should consider when reviewing surrogate profiles including age, birth history, mental health, and physical health.

We have candidates that range between 21 and 42 years old. Do you connect with someone close to you in age? Someone older? Someone younger? This can be one of the first filters that help you when choosing a surrogate.

Every surrogate has already given birth to a child, but some have been surrogates for years and have helped many intended parents grow their families. Do you prefer to select a surrogate that has this kind of experience?

All our surrogates go through rigorous mental and physical health screenings to increase the chances of a healthy pregnancy and delivery, but you should also be looking at their medical history to avoid any surprises.

Other Factors

There are many aspects to choosing a surrogate, and the physical and mental characteristics are only one part of the story. Your first meeting with a potential surrogate should be a sort of interview that allows you to explore your chemistry with the woman that could be carrying your child. If you click with her and her family, you might have found your match!

You should also ask her about her own support system and environment to ensure she has everything she needs to maintain a positive mindset throughout the process. Community support, financial stability, and her commitment to being a surrogate are all things you can discuss during the meeting.

At Family Creations, we believe choosing a surrogate that meets your needs has several different components. While we provide intensive screening to ensure their health, financial stability, and commitment to the program, you should also do your due diligence to learn all you can about potential matches.
